Who Needs Charterers Legal Liability Coverage?
An importer, exporter or trader who enters into a contract (charter party) with a vessel owner to lease all or part of a vessel.
(Note: There are two types of charter -- voyage charter, which is for a specified voyage, and time charter, which is for a specified amount of time. In both cases, the charterer is legally liable for a number of factors relating to the charter and needs protection.)
What´s Covered?
This policy covers the charterer´s obligation to direct the vessel to a safe berth and to load, stow and unload cargo. It also covers liability for damage to piers and pier facilities resulting from acts for which the charterer is responsible, liability for loss of life or bodily injury resulting from the charterer´s negligence and for damage to cargo of third parties carried on board the vessel.
